Marydel was born on March 22, 1925, in Evanston, Illinois to Hiram Allen and Delphine Wood Miller. After graduation from Maine Township High School, Park Ridge, Illinois, she attended Goucher College, Baltimore, Maryland where she graduated with a B.A. degree in romance languages in 1947.
Following graduation, she taught Spanish in Fort Knox High School, Kentucky and French to Army troops selected for Universal Military Training. During this period, she was introduced by a friend to Charles Burton, who was on active duty with the Air Corps Reserves at Godman Field, Fort Knox. They were married in the post chapel in 1948; a marriage that lasted 68 years until his death in 2017.
While her husband was in law school at the University of Kentucky, she was the manager of Sutton Electronic Company in Lexington, Kentucky. Shortly after his graduation from law school, due to the Korean War, he was called back on active duty with the Air Force. As a result, he pursued a career as a Judge Advocate in the regular Air Force.
While in the Air Force they were stationed in the Tidewater area of Virginia several times, in northern and southern California and in England. In retirement they continued to travel to Europe the Far East and Middle East. Marydel was active in volunteer work and Officers’ Wives Clubs at every base where they lived. At Langley Air Force base, she was president of one of the largest clubs in the Air Force.
They retired in Winter Park in 1977 where she continued to be active in club work. She was president of the Kappa Alpha Theta alumnae club and was president of her condominium board for several years. She also enjoyed her membership in The Town Club of Winter Park.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Maryanna Burton Koziar and is survived by two daughters, Martha Burton Lyons (Robert) of Evans, Georgia and Linnell Burton of Winter Park, and her son-in-law, Robert L. Koziar of Anderson, South Carolina. Also, Grandchildren David R. Lyons and Philip C. Lyons and Mary Katherine Koziar.
A celebration of her life will be held at the First United Methodist Church Chapel, 125 N. Interlachen Ave., Winter Park, FL 32789 on August 9, 2022. The reception will begin at 12:30 in the fellowship hall with a musical tribute to follow at 2 p.m.
Graveside services will be conducted at Camp Nelson National Cemetery, Nicholasville, Kentucky at a later date where she will be laid to rest next to her husband.
