John Alexander Coleman, Jr. MD. died June 20, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. He was born July 25, 1935 in Plant City, FL to Mary Dabney and Dr. John A. Coleman, Sr. He graduated from Tulane University and Tulane University Medical School, New Orleans, LA, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order and Nu Sigma Nu, Medical Fraternity. He completed his internship in Ear, Nose and Throat, and Head and Neck Surgery at Jefferson Medical College Hospital, Philadelphia, PA with general surgical training at Highland Alameda Hospital in Oakland, CA. Dr. Coleman became a US Flight Surgeon and served on the staff of the ENT Department at US Naval School of Aviation Medicine in Pensacola, FL where he met and married Carolyn Cummins Griffin, June 22, 1963. Dr. and Mrs. Coleman settled in Winter Park in 1968 where he joined Dr. Jack Mahan and began a career in private practice. Dr. Coleman served on the staffs of Winter Park Memorial Hospital, FL Hospital Orlando, and FL Hospital Altamonte Springs for 34 years. He was a member of Orange County Medical Society, AMA and a Fellow of American College of Surgeons. He was a past president of the Florida Society of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery. He was an active member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Winter Park having served on the vestry for 4 terms, 2 as senior warden. Additionally Dr. Coleman volunteered for numerous activities and ministries at All Saints and served as a volunteer at Shepherd's Hope. Dr. Coleman served as the 1st president of the La Amistad Foundation. Dr. Coleman loved his annual family vacations to St. George Island, playing the piano he had had since his childhood and working in the yard. He had a deep and abiding faith, loved his family dearly, took incredible care of his patients, always had a kind word to say to everyone, cared deeply for his friends, and left a wonderful legacy. Dr. Coleman is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Katherine Coleman Williams. In addition to his wonderful wife Carolyn, Dr. Coleman is survived by their four daughters and their families - Courtney and Mark Leggett, Dabney and John Albritton, Nell and John Flynt, and Polly and Rob Little, and grandchildren - Coleman and Mary Page Leggett, Jack and Carolyn Albritton, Parks and Dabney Flynt, and Katherine and Laura Little. A memorial service will be held at All Saints Church in Winter Park on Saturday, June 25, 2016, at 11 a.m. A reception will follow at the church.
