Sue Ellen Vernon, known as Granny Sue to friends and family, passed away at the age of 74 on November 3, 2021. She was born and raised in Winston-Salem, NC. Born on December 29, 1946, Sue was the daughter of Roy Glenn Vernon and Doretha Mae Gibson Vernon. She attended Appalachian State University, where she met her former husband, Joseph Michael White, Jr., but found her true calling in nursing. Sue attended Forsyth Technical Community College and became a registered nurse in 1978. Upon completion, Sue spent her career taking care of critically ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit at Forsyth Medical Center. Granny Sue devoted her life to being a caregiver.
After the arrival of her grandchildren, she was immediately transformed into Granny Sue. She was known for her love and compassion by all. Sue proudly took an active role in raising her grandchildren, attending their many sporting events, cheering them on, accompanying them on new and exciting adventures, and spoiling them like all stereotypical grandmothers do. She was also an avid reader and loved to learn new things. She collected jewelry, antique dolls, and loved to cook and decorate for the holidays.
Sue was a spiritual woman who will be sorely missed by all. Her love, compassion, smiles, and laughs would cheer anyone up even on their worst day. Sue was almost naïve to negativity and brought joy to everyone around her. She is preceded in death by her daughter, Joely Michelle White. She is survived by her son, Joseph Michael White, III(Alyssa); grandchildren, Rasha(Shaun), Michael(Heather), Zachary(Carson), Malik(Luree), Nadra and Ralphie(Rachel); and great-grandchildren, Rocco, Teddy, Avery, Alex, Nevaeh, Caige, Camden, Hazel, Magnolia, and Bashir. There will be a private service held at Forsyth Memorial Park on Wednesday, November 10th.
