Shirley Starr Barton Hill of Winston-Salem, passed away peacefully at Trinity Elms in Clemmons, NC on February 4, 2022, at the age of 95. She was born August 19, 1926 in Dublin, GA., the daughter of John Willard Barton and Clara Margretha Starr. On October 11, 1952, she married George B. Hill, Jr. of Atlanta, GA, and soon after moved to Winston-Salem, NC. They raised their family in the South Fork community. Shirley worked many years for Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools as a teaching assistant. She attended St. Leo's Catholic Church. She was a longtime member of two bridge clubs and later in life enjoyed being a member of the Red Hat Society and working as a volunteer for Meals On Wheels of Forsyth County. She was preceded in death by her husband George B. Hill, Jr. in 2006, by a sister Anne McCray Barton Robinson of Birmingham, AL in 1991, and by a brother John Willard Barton, Jr. of Largo, FL in 2018. Surviving are two sons, George Byron Hill III (and wife Sharon) of Nashville, TN, Barton Combs Hill (and wife Margaret) of Mocksville, NC, two daughters, Lori Hill Church (and husband Earnie) of Conway, SC, and Mollie Starr Hill Joyner (and husband David) of Southport, NC., a grandson, Mitchell Church (and wife Anna), four granddaughters, Melissa Church, Jessi Hill, Samantha Joyner Smith (and husband Eric Smith), and Abbie Joyner. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren, and by many nephews, a niece, their families, extended family and longtime friends. A private burial will be conducted for the family at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family wishes to thank the staff of Trinity Elms Assisted Living, and Trinity Elms Health & Rehab in Clemmons, NC.
