Margaret was born in Hertford, NC and spent her youth in Durham, NC. She was the daughter of J. Marvin Ormond and Katrina Kern Ormond. She was predeceased by her husband, E. Wannamaker Hardin, and her brother and sisters, Kern Ormond, Janet Lide, Jessie Pyne, and Elizabeth Byrum.
She received her bachelors degree from Duke University where she met and married The Rev. Wannamaker Hardin in 1938. They enjoyed 56 years of marriage before his death in 1994. He was a United Methodist pastor, serving churches in Winston-Salem, NC and in the following places in S.C.: Graniteville, Clemson, Spartanburg, Charleston, Rock Hill, Columbia and Orangeburg. Margaret was a homemaker and raised four children in Methodist parsonages. As her children grew older she also had a career as an elementary school teacher. Margaret and Wannie spent their retirement years in their home at Lake Junaluska, NC. She was a resident of the Arbor Acres Methodist Retirement Home in Winston-Salem for the last 15 years of her life.
She is survived by her sons, Wannamaker Hardin, Jr. (Betsy) of Lake Junaluska, NC and M. Ormond Hardin (Cynde Grieve) of Halifax, Nova Scotia and daughters, Margaret Katrina (Peggy) Hardin (Janet Raffetto) of Baltimore, Md. and Harriet Peterson (Jim) of Lynchburg Va. She was very proud of her seven grandchildren: Eric and Edward Hardin, Justin and Cecily Hardin, Katrina Chadwick, Laura Smith, and Larry Flagler. Also she is survived by a new generation of 12 great-grandchildren.
Margaret was a loving mother and grandmother, a faithful companion to her husband, and one well loved in each community in which she lived. She will be remembered for her love of music, her sense of humor, and her willingness to help others. She will be missed by family and friends alike.
A memorial service and celebration of life service for her will be held on Sunday, December 11, at 4:00 p.m. at the Arbor Acres Retirement Home in Winston-Salem. A service of remembrance and committal will be held in the chapel at the Garrett-Hillcrest Cemetery and Mausoleum in Waynesville, NC on Monday, December 12, at 2:00 p.m.
