It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our father/Opa/Uncle/friend on January 10th, 2019. Dad will be missed by his children Peter (Eleanor), Richard (Susan) and Jan (Tim). Opa will be missed by his beloved grandchildren Jaime (Evan), Andrew, Lauren and Carlee, and great grandchildren Ben and Emma. Vic was predeceased by his wife Joy and sister, Eleanore (Lori) Peters.
Vic was born in Halbstadt, Southern Russia to Peter and Helene (nee Schroeder) Willms. He immigrated to Winnipeg with his parents & sister at the age of one. Graduated from Daniel McIntyre. He met the love of his life Joy at United College with their marriage following in 1954. Together as a young couple, Vic and Joy had a reputation for elegance on the dance floor.
Vic graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Science degree which led to a successful career with Ayerst Laboratories in pharmaceutical sales. He served on the board of directors for Concordia Hospital and Bethania Personal Care Home, along with being a past president of the Wildwood Club. He enjoyed many years of curling as a spectator and player. Vic was a huge Blue Bomber fan. His passion for the sport rubbed off on the whole family.
In early years Dad loved traveling with the family. We trailered throughout all of Canada and most of the U.S. in their Silverliner tent trailer. In later years many happy summers were spent at West Hawk Lake where Dad became the “unofficial” Mayor of the campground presiding over many 4 o’clock Happy hours. Dad and mom also served as campground hosts at West Hawk. Ocean cruising became a passion for them where they travelled the world and made many lifelong friends. They loved to entertain wherein Mom did the cooking while Dad ensured everyone had a wonderful time.
We are all happy to know that Dad is now enjoying a glass of red wine with the Joy of his life. Travel well!
A memorial service will be held on Friday March 1, 2019 at 11:00 am at First Mennonite church at 922 Notre Dame Avenue.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Humane Society or a charity of your choice.
“Goodbye my family my life has passed,
I loved you all to the very last,
Weep not for me, take but courage,
Love each other, for my sake,
For those you love don’t go away,
They walk beside you everyday”
