1933 - 2023
It is with deep sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Ron Davis with his family by his side on November 8th, 2023.
Ron is survived by his wife of 59 years Velma Davis, nee Dow, his children Richard (Rochelle) and Jennifer (Kate) and his grandchildren Meredith, Matthew and Samuel.
Ron was predeceased by his parents Richard and May Davis and his sister Sheila Donato.
Ron served his country from 1952 until 1962 in the Royal Canadian Navy as a Communications Operator. He served on various naval ships and bases throughout Canada and sailed to the far east during his service.
Following his many years in the Navy, Ron returned to school. After many years of working and completing university courses, all while raising two young children with Velma, Ron graduated from the University of Winnipeg in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. This immense achievement was one of the proudest moments of Ron’s life.
Ron worked for the Canadian National Railway for 28 years before retiring in 1991. He was one of the founding members of the CN Pensioners Association (CNPA) of Manitoba. Ron was on the executive of the National and Provincial Councils of the CNPA for many years and served as President for both. The annual bocce ball tournament held in Winnipeg every summer will be renamed in Ron’s honour.
During retirement, he spent many years golfing with friends, family, and neighbours. He held memberships at Transcona GC, Teulon GC, and Carman GC over the years. He also spent many years curling with the St. Vital Senior Men’s Curling Club. Ron and Velma also had some wonderful vacations and cruises and were fortunate enough to have seen many countries in Europe, the Mediterranean, the Panama Canal, Istanbul and the Caribbean among other places.
Ron loved sharing stories and a glass of wine with friends and family. He will be greatly missed for his silly sense of humour, his love of a bad joke and good food and his love for his family.
A private celebration and burial will be held at a later date.
Ron’s family would like to thank the staff at Riverview Health Centre for their excellent care.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Cancer Care Manitoba or a charity of your choice.
