Very sorry to learn of Ron's passing.  We worked together in Calgary, sharing both stressful times and laughs.  I wish all the family the best.

I'm part of that massive group fortunate enough to have been deeply connected to Ronnie in so many ways, for so many years. He was a teammate, roommate, confidant and leader. He inspired and went into any endeavour with passion, curiosity, focus, courage and a special kind of flair that characterized everything he did. 

And what an eclectic range and variety of stuff. Elegant hockey player with a smooth finish complemented by a menacing presence that rarely had to be employed because he got plenty of space out there. (Man, I’m grateful to have always played with, and not against him!). Coached elite minor hockey. Amateur Egyptologist expert with a vast knowledge of the Valley of the Kings. Did the heavy frontline work with at risk youth and during those social worker years designed and implemented innovative programs for some very damaged kids. Incredibly wide range of interests and knowledge in music. Cook, mechanic, sailor, golfer, traveler, and entrepreneur.
There’s plenty more to add to the astounding list of achievements but for those of us that shared in Ronnie’s life the greater measure is in his relationships. The guy always brought tremendous insight, humour, compassion and wisdom into every personal encounter. He was a great listener and never needed many words to make a point. You knew you were being heard. And with respect and candor. (Oh he never hesitated to be blunt.)

I loved Ronnie. He’s been one of the most influential forces in my life. So to Debbie and family, the Barons, I feel your devastation and loss. But what a privilege and gift it’s been to have had Ronnie in our lives.

Ron, who was my younger brother, was very special to me. Our years together were filled with wonderful memories.  During our childhood years, we were both playing sports all year round. I could see it didn't take long for Ron to be involved in  and enjoying all kinds of sports.
When Ron and I were not involved in sports, our parents were busy taking us out to our grandparents' farm.  This is where the freedom of space and beauty of nature was just exhilarating for Ron.
When Ron graduated from Social Work, it didn't take long for him to pursue his Masters Degree in Social Work. The way Ron did so well in school was the same way he looked at education in  life. A witty, sharp fellow, Ron  constantly amazed me with his knowledge.
Even the times I visited with Ron in the hospital, he continually amazed me while he mastered any newspaper crossword puzzle with ease. I would say, "Ron, how did you know that word?" With a shrug and a gleam in his eye he would go on to the next word. That was Ron.
Ron's love for sports, especially for hockey, never waned. In the 80's, while Ron was in Calgary, I played hockey with him on the weekends. I could not keep up with his hockey skills and sports knowledge. One evening, when Ron was over at my place, he mentioned that he had some holidays that winter, and that he was planning a trip to Europe. Ron said that he was going to watch Team Canada play in the World Ice Hockey Championships.  That was Ron. 
To show Ron's other side, I remember him showing up a bit late for a game one night. When I said, "Ron did you get tied up at work?"  Ron casually said, "after work I'm involved with this organization that works with troubled kids." Well I thought, that's Ron.
Ron's love for the outdoors was unbelievable. A couple of years ago, Ron and I went fishing with our uncle. You can imagine the three of us talking fish stories for hours the night before our enjoyable day of fishing. When morning came, the sandwiches were packed and the coffee was made and away we went. 
Our conversations in the boat were something else as we covered every aspect of sports. Around 5 in the evening, the sandwiches were gone and the coffee was dry. Our uncle turned to us and said, "anytime you guys want to go back in, let me know."  I looked at Ron and he calmly replied, "well let's take one more try along the shore." We were just enjoying the day too much, and he didn't want the day to end.  That was Ron.
Debbie, you have spoken of the wonderful life you had with my brother, and I can certainly understand it. When Ron's health began to decline, the hours, days, and months you spent by his side were unsurpassed. Ron knew that you were a cornerstone in his life. Thank you for your love for Ron and for all your caring.

Dear Debbie, Kathleena, Archie & Families, We were so sad to hear Ron had been sick and left this life. A special and dear friend to John for over 40 years, Ron was warm, humorous and loved lively conversation. We have so many memories of Ron's journey through life from Winnipeg to Calgary to Winnipeg and then Grand Beach. His visits to Vancouver with Kathleena whom he loved so much were especially memorable. We will miss your smile, laugh and all those wonderful visits we had together. Ron lived across the street from me as kids growing up.  I didn't know him well, but we were friends.  I just lost my husband to cancer a month ago.  My family knows what your family is feeling.
