It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Moira Welsh on Tuesday, February 14, 2023. Moira will be greatly missed by her sons Ken (Brenda) and Andrew, and her grandchildren Ryan, Brendon, Christa, Corey, Ted (Krysta) and Julianna (Will). She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, William (Bill) in 2017.
Moira was born on March 1, 1936 in Dundee, Scotland. After leaving school she worked in a credit office. Moira married Bill, a seaman in the merchant navy, and joined his ship in Liverpool, becoming a member of the crew as it was not legal for the ship to have passengers. She enjoyed her time in Amsterdam, and various ports of call in Germany, and it was then that her love of travel and adventure was born. Shortly after their son Ken was born in Scotland they moved to Tanzania. Moira enjoyed her time in East Africa and had wonderful memories of the lions, elephants, and other wildlife that she encountered. Her son Andrew was born in Africa, and the family eventually returned to Scotland. In 1968 it was time for another adventure and the family crossed the Atlantic on the Empress of Britain. After brief stops in Kelwood, Killarney, and Winnipegosis, the family eventually settled in Winnipeg. As Bill pursued his career in education, Moira raised her boys and worked at Gambles and the head office at McCleod's. Eventually she decided to become a businesswoman and created her own successful company making Holy Communion wafers that were distributed across Canada. Moira and Bill found the time to travel, notably to Germany, England, Florida (every winter), and several trips back home to Scotland.
Moira stayed active until shortly before her death. She was an avid curler and loved watching her prize horse Hunker on the harness racing circuit. She was a volunteer at the Good Neighbors Active Living Centre for many years, and was a proud member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority. When she managed to find some quiet time, she enjoyed old movies and craft making.
Per her wishes, she will be cremated and there will be no funeral. The ashes of Moira and Bill will be returned to Scotland.
