It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Kevin Mowat on September 5, 2017.
Kevin will be lovingly remembered by his wife Jen (nee Cox) of 38 years; son Andrew, mother in law Joyce Cox, sister Vi (Bob), brother Jeff (Tracy), brother in law Michael, Aileen Mowat, adored nieces and nephews; Jen, Lindsay, Derek, Justin, Stephen, Bryce, Sean, Lindsay, and Dave; as well as treasured friends and colleagues.
Kevin was born in Windsor, Ontario on December 13, 1952, to Power and Joy Mowat. He met the love of his life Jen and they were married on July 7, 1979 and settled in Winnipeg. Their dreams of becoming parents came true when Kevin and Jen were blessed with a son Andrew in 1993. Kevin was devoted to his family and would do anything for them. Always a support, always in tune, always loving and generous. He loved the family gatherings held over the years in Gladstone, Winnipeg, Clear Lake and Victoria Beach. He cherished family vacations to B.C. and cruises to the Caribbean and Alaska. Kevin’s larger than life personality and booming presence would brighten anyone’s day.
One of his passions in life was education. He was committed to lifelong learning, obtaining his Bachelor of Education from Brandon University and his Master of Education from the University of Manitoba. Kevin dedicated his life to teaching and inspiring countless students and colleagues over the past 42 years in The Winnipeg School Division. For the last 10 years, he worked as the Library Consultant and laterally expanded his role to become the Library Learning Consultant which reflected his love for literacy, innovation, and the digital world. In May 2016, Kevin was honoured by the Manitoba School Library Association with a Distinguished Service Award. Kevin was an intellect who loved people and the challenge of being a champion for others.
Another passion in his life over the past two years was working out daily at the Reh-Fit Center. He was motivated to improve himself and to try new activities while in the company of great friends and staff.
The outpouring of love and support has affected the family deeply and has been a huge source of strength and we thank you. Kevin touched many lives over his lifetime at work, at the Reh-Fit Center, in the neighbourhood but mostly importantly in his family. May his spirit of warmth, happiness, caring for others and love remain in your hearts and lives.
A memorial service celebrating Kevin’s life will take place on Friday, September 15, at 2 p.m. at Thomson in the Park, 1291 McGillivray Blvd, in Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers family and friends may wish to make a donation to the Reh-Fit Foundation, the Winnipeg Humane Society or a school library of choice.
