Dad was born the oldest of five children in Poland. He immigrated to Canada with his family in 1930 at the age of 10 settling in the Foley Manitoba area. Being the oldest, Dad took over the family farm from his parents after a farm accident incapacitated his father. He took jobs off the farm in bush camps and the Santa Patricia Gold mine in Ontario to help make ends meet. After marrying mom in June 1949 he continued to work many construction jobs in the summers to help subsidize the limited farm income.
In July of 1980 they sold and left the farm to move to Winnipeg to be closer to family. Once there dad needed to do something so at the age of 60 he took a job at the Kildonan East Collegiate as a custodian. He worked there until the age of 71 and, much to the chagrin of the school division, began collecting a pension. He often jokingly said that if the school had known he was going to live this long they would have made him retire much sooner.
Dad and Mom were long time members at St. Annes Ukrainian Catholic Church.. Dad always said Sunday was only a small part of “church”. He enjoyed numerous activities such as square dancing, the seniors social gatherings and perogie making, which all gave him a sense of belonging and community. He was also a long time member of the Knights of Columbus and was highly respected. In his retirement both he and Mom enjoyed travelling, gardening, their church family and all the activities associated with belonging to St. Anne’s
After Mom's passing Dad remained in their home on Dunrobin with St. Anne’s church family as his anchor. He continued his involvement in activities as well as needle point, macramé chairs and other art related hobbies. When the house became too much he moved into an apartment where he continued to be an out going social person in the card rooms and numerous activities while still continued with his St. Anne’s friends. His family felt at times they needed to book an appointment or at least check to ensure he was home before dropping by. Like so many, Covid changed everything for him, but he continued to manage on his own remaining fiercely independent. It was only this past few months, at 102, that he needed extra care and moved into an intermediate care facility. He was playing crib with his children up until this past week when he fell ill and past peacefully on September 8th at the St. Boniface hospital.
We will miss him each and every day as we have missed our mother all these years.
