Peacefully, on May 12, 2020 James Douglas Philp passed away of a stroke.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sharon; daughter Nicole (Denis) of Regina; and brother Bruce of Toronto. He was predeceased by his parents Fred and Jean (Lane) Philp.
Jim was born August 23, 1939 in Souris MB. His family farmed, and after his father died, Jim continued farming, while attending University and working. He eventually sold the farm and moved to Winnipeg. He worked for Canadian Co-op Implements and John Deere, before being hired by the University of Manitoba to teach in the Faculty of Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering Department. This is where he worked until his retirement in 2009.
Jim loved teaching, and he loved his students. He felt very fortunate to educate so many bright, keen young people and he kept up with many of his students over the years. Jim was the recipient of many teaching awards throughout his career, from both Diploma and Degree students. He was delighted and amazed that Nicole, who had only lived in a city, got her degree in Agriculture and has worked in agriculture since graduating.
Jim loved fishing and hunting and in recent years, took up sporting clays shooting with friends. In early years, we camped in our Volkswagen vans and travelled throughout most of North America.
Jim was a wonderful friend, generous with his time. He had many friends and associates, and was happy to keep in touch with them over the years. His memory will be cherished by many.
Thank you to St. Boniface doctors and nurses, who took such good care of him, and went above and beyond to help us communicate with him.
A family service has been held: a larger gathering in his memory will be announced at a later time.
In lieu of flowers and in keeping with Jim’s focus on agriculture and education, donations to Agriculture in the Classroom – Manitoba would be appreciated. Please indicate “In memory of Jim Philp.” Information on how to donate to AITC-M can be found at https://www.aitc.mb.ca/get-involved/donate-to-aitc-m
