Born October 29, 1938 on the farm near Aberdeen, Saskatchewan, James attended Aberdeen schools before moving on to Ontario Veterinary College, now part of the University of Guelph, graduating in 1962.
Jim and Alice were married shortly afterwards and moved to Grand Prairie, Alberta to practice in Veterinary Medicine. After a short stay in Vegreville, Alberta he bought the practice in Eckville, Alberta. In 1970 he moved to the National Pathology Lab in Hull Quebec. From there he went back to the Ontario Veterinary College for his diploma in Pathology and ACVP accreditation.
