It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Elsie Irene Hilda Lowings on Friday, August 1, 2014 at the age of 98.
Elsie will be lovingly remembered by her children Geraldine and husband Dave Desjardine, Diane and husband Rob McWhirter, Sylvia and husband Gary Parker, grandsons Russ ( Anne) Desjardine, Marc (Cindy) Desjardine, Kelsey ( Erin) Desjardine, Jason Slevinsky , great grandchildren Claire, Leia, Graham, Patrick, Norah, Ellie, Sadie and Skyler, niece Gwen (Richard Greig) and nephew Richard (Marilyn) Botheras.
Elsie was born in Winnipeg on August 7, 1915. She was a strong and independent individual. As a young girl she shared many happy times and adventures with her brother Tommy , sister Sally and parents Tom and Jane Corthwaite at her aunt and uncle’s farm and at Agimak Lake in Ignace, Ontario. She worked at Eaton’s mail order until she joined the Canadian Women’s Army Corp in 1943. Elsie served as a Company Quartermaster Sergeant until returning to civilian life in 1946. After a fairy-tale courtship with a British soldier visiting Winnipeg, she married in 1946 and joined her husband Fred in England. They returned to Winnipeg in 1948. She worked at Sears Canada until her retirement.
Elsie was a talented artist, although if you complemented her work she would claim that she was not a professional. Many of her oil paintings are displayed in homes of family and friends and are cherished gifts. After her retirement, she enjoyed travelling with her friend Ruth Desjardine. Elsie was a crossword enthusiast and she also enjoyed reading and bingo. She was especially proud of the accomplishments of her children and their families.
According to her wishes cremation has taken place and a private family service was held on Wednesday, August 6th. Rev. Janet Walker officiating.
We would like to thank Dr. Y Kotecha and Dr. Pat Harris for the outstanding medical care they provided. Thanks also to the Staff of Sturgeon Creek Retirement Centre. The family would also like to say a special thank you to Richard and Scott Grieg for providing the beautiful music after the service.
