It is with great sadness that the family announces the sudden passing of their beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Diane Margaret Hicks of Winnipeg MB at the St. Boniface Hospital after a brief illness.
Diane is survived by her husband of 46 years Dennis Hicks, son Shawn (Kelly) Hicks, daughter Shannon (Colin) Ghostkeeper, granddaughters Ellie and Kelsey.
Diane was born to parents Arthur and Norma Rempel on May 30, 1953. She grew up first on Garfield Street with her siblings, Kathy, Irene, Ken and Don. Later moving to Riley Crescent, and then to a horse ranch farm on the perimeter highway.
Diane spent most of her summers at the family cottage at White Lake in the Whiteshell and continued to spend time there until the cottage was sold.
Diane ventured into adulthood and met her husband Dennis at the security offices where they worked in 1977. Dennis and Diane got married at the Fern Grotto in Kauai Hawaii on April 1, 1982. Diane had her first child, a girl named Shannon Dawn in 1979, she would then welcome a son, Shawn William Arthur in 1981.
Diane was a stay-at-home caregiver for many years, working many different jobs and finally ended up at Advance Electronics in the accounts payable department. Retiring in 2018 after 30 years of service.
In 2011 and 2016 two of her most favorite people were born, her granddaughters Ellie Margaret and Kelsey Clara. Diane loved her granddaughters more than anything. Diane was quoted to say, “When I see those girls it does my heart good”. Never showing up empty handed, having a box of smarties for each of the girls, a bag of cheezies or “dragon water” for Kelsey. The girls named her candy grandma, and for good reason. The Saturday before she passed away both girls visited her in the hospital, Ellie on one side and Kelsey holding her hand on the other. Kelsey then getting into bed with Grandma to snuggle for one last time.
Diane loved to travel. Since her retirement in 2018, Diane and Dennis travelled to Ireland, England, Amsterdam, Austria, Italy, Switzerland and France. Diane was blessed to see her son marry the women of his dreams, Kelly, in Las Vegas in 2016. Diane would travel to Kansas City to watch the Chiefs play and multiple occasions to her favorite spot in Jasper, Alberta where she would stay at the Becker’s Chalet.
Diane was caring and kind, always putting the needs of others first. She enjoyed the simple things in life, spending time with her family, reading, playing games and being at home with Dennis.
A special thank you to the nurses and doctors on floor 8 at St. Boniface Hospital, and her home care nurse Glenda who continued to visit with her in the hospital.
Internment will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 28, 2023 at Thompson “In the Park” Funeral Home and Cemetery, 1291 McGillivray Blvd Winnipeg MB with a Service of Remembrance to follow at 2:00.pm.
