It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Allan George Horton on November 8, 2020 at the age of 90.
Allan is survived by his wife of 68 years Jean; his children Glen (Chris), Sharon (Paul), Don (Lynn), Myles (Tracy); grandchildren Daniel and Ayla; great-grandchildren Breanna and Jovi. He is also survived by his brother Doug and sister-in-law Wilma.
Allan was born and raised in Oak Bluff, Manitoba to William and Elizabeth Horton (Clerihew) on April 25, 1930. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers Don and Ken.
Dad and mom met in 1948 and married in 1952. In 1955 they moved to Fort Garry where they built a loving home and raised their four children. They remained in the Fort Garry area keeping close ties with family and friends.
Dad spent almost 50 years in the construction business as a dragline operator working throughout Manitoba and Ontario. Once retired he enjoyed bowling and participating in the Seniors games in Manitoba and as far as Moncton. Dad and Mom are the proud recipients of several medals including gold.
Dad loved spending time with his granddaughter taking her on day trips, Wild West shows and Celebrations dinner theatre. More recently he enjoyed spending time with his great-granddaughter. Every visit ended with Papa pulling either a small toy or coins from Breanna’s ear. It was a tradition he had a hard time giving up as Breanna got older.
Dad’s passion for hockey included coaching at the local community club, the game time keeper for the Winnipeg Police hockey league, and watching his favorite team, the Winnipeg Jets.
Dad also enjoyed spending time in the outdoors. There were many trips out to cottage country, and fishing and hunting trips with the guys. Dad’s proudest accomplishment was getting his first deer at the age of 80.
Due to Covid restrictions, a private family graveside service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to The War Amps or to a charity of your choice.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the first responders for their professional and compassionate care.
