Charles O. Maddox Jr. of Winder, passed away February 29th, 2012. He is survived by his wife Betty Jo and son, Christopher B. Maddox and his wife Kimberly and their children, Samantha, Morgan & Zackary all of Winder, Barrow County. Mr. Maddox was the son of the late Charles Oscar Maddox Sr. and Willie Mitcham Maddox both of Barrow County.
Following his graduation from Duke University in 1942, Mr. Maddox volunteered for service in the Army Air Corps. He served as an officer in the Pacific Theater. Following his discharge was employed by McDonnell-Douglas in St. Louis.
In 1947, Mr. Maddox returned to Winder and joined The Peoples Bank. In 1953 Mr. Maddox married Betty Jo Blanton of Asheville, NC. Mr. Maddox served as President of The Peoples Bank until 1997 and Chairman until his retirement in 2005. Mr. Maddox was the founding President of the Community Bankers Association of Georgia as well as the founding chairman of Georgia Bankers Bank. In 1976, he served as national President of the Independent Bankers Association of America. He served his community through many civic, business and charitable organizations. He was a lifetime active member of the First Baptist Church of Winder. Mr. Maddox was a member of Athens Country Club and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland.
Mr. Maddox was respected and beloved by generations of his bank employees and citizens of Barrow County.
The family will receive friends Friday, March 2, from 6 to 9 p.m. The services will be held Saturday, March 3, at 2:30 p.m., at the First Baptist Church of Winder. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.
