He was preceded in death by his parents, Esther Richardson Williams ad Clarence Vincent Williams, a brother-in-law, Harold Wester and his mother and father-in-law, Catherine N. Hufton and Henry Earl Hufton Sr.
Clarence was born in Nash County and graduated from Rocky Mount Senior High School. Due to his six feet, nine inches of height, he was recruited to play basketball there and acquired a nickname “The Beak”. He attended Edward’s Military Institute at Salemburg, NC on a basketball scholarship for two years. Then he transferred to East Carolina University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1961.
Clarence touched many lives during his lifetime. He taught school (social
studies, P.E. and drivers ed) coached football, basketball, baseball and cheerleaders. He taught at Creswell High in Washington County, Benvenue High and Middlesex High in Nash County. He also worked as a Rehabilitation Counselor at Maury, NC encouraging young people to better their lives. He was Associate Director of Admissions at Chowan College, Murfreesboro, NC traveling VA and NC recruiting students. He served his communities as a Jaycee in Rocky
Mount and Murfreesboro, NC before moving to Wilson. Clarence joined Bridgestone-Firestone, Inc in 1975 and retired from there in 2000. Parkinson's disease which he suffered with for twenty nine years initiated an early retirement. After this he delivered Meals on Wheels to the residents of Wilson County for almost two years driving ninety miles per day five days a week.
In 1978 he and his wife became Charter Members of Stoneybrook Christian Church on Airport Blvd. in Wilson. He served on the Board of Trustees for thirty years until his health forced him to retire. As a member there he played on their softball team and joined their bowling league.
Clarence was a lover of music, enjoyed outdoor activities, had a small library of books and was an avid sports fan, especially for his beloved ECU, UNC and Dallas Cowboy teams.
He is well known for his great sense of humor; always ready to tell a good joke.
He leaves his best friend and devoted wife of fifty seven years, Marie Hufton Williams, two sons Shawn (Melanie) of Mechanicsville, VA and Myron Williams (Emily) of Phoenix Arizona, his adorable grandchildren, Haley Williams Ward (Jacob), Isaac Jude Williams, and Isabella Jane Williams of Mechanicsville VA, Zachary and Lucas Williams of Phoenix, AZ. He is also survived by his sister, Kay Williams Wester, of Rocky Mount, NC, his sister-in-law Shirley Hufton Swain and brother-in-law, Henry Earl Hufton, Jr. both of Wilson, and several nieces and nephews who played an important role in his life.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to his sister, Kay Wester, who so relentlessly helped with his caregiving. We extend our deepest gratitude to the nurses and staff at Wilson Rehabilitation and Nursing Home for trying to make him comfortable during his stay there. Also, the members of Stoneybrook Christian Church were beloved angels to him. Thank you so much!
