C.D. grew up in eastern North Carolina and was a United States Army veteran, serving as a Staff Sergeant. He graduated from Atlantic Christian College and retired as the Director of Public Works for Elizabeth City, NC. C.D. enjoyed creating his small family farm, studying Genealogy and his Scottish heritage, cooking, and gardening. His wife, Doris, was the love of his life for 21 years along with his cat, Baby Girl. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Surviving are his wife, Doris Renfrow Rackley; four sons, Charles Dewitt “Dee” Mercer III (Lori) of Rolesville, Chad D. Mercer of Louisburg, Barry Jackson Holbert (Lisa) of Louisburg, and Charlie Edwards of Chesapeake, VA; one daughter, Kimberly Anne Mercer (Scott) of Raleigh; three grandchildren, Charles Dewitt “C.D.” Mercer IV, Tiffany Mercer Wheeler, and James Hardy “Jay” Mercer; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Jay Mercer of Wilson; and one sister, Ruby Newcombe (Austin) of Wilson.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jennifer Rae Mercer; his parents, Charles Dewitt Mercer I and Ann Little Mercer Vaughan; and a sister, Ruth McCormick.
