Commander William D. “Bill” Paschall, USN passed away on 17 March 2021 at the age of 90. He was born in Warren County, NC on October 4, 1930. He graduated from New Hanover High School on June 10, 1949, and on graduation; enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served for 34 years.
Promotions included the senior enlisted rating of Master Chief Yeoman, commissioned under the Navy's Limited Duty Officer Program, attaining the rank of Commander. He served on the following war ships during his career: USS Mathews (AKA96), USS Seminole (AKA104), USS Orleans Parish (LST1069), USS Intrepid (CVA11-Two tours), USS Saratoga (CVA60), USS Enterprise (CVAN65) and USS Nimitz (CVN68), plus numerous shore stations, including Commanding Officer, Naval Reserve Center, Wilmington, NC, and an in-country tour in Vietnam in 68-69.
During his early years in the Navy, he attended numerous universities while on shore duty, receiving a Bachelor of Sciences Degree through the Department of Defense Regents Program from the State University of New York at Albany.
Commander Paschall holds the following decorations: Legion of Merit, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal (2 awards), Navy Commendation Medal w/ V device, Navy Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon w/ V device, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Battle Efficiency "E", Good Conduct Medal (4 awards), Navy Expeditionary Medal, China Service Medal (Extended), Navy Occupation Medal, National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), Armed Forces Expeditionary Service Medal (4 awards), United Nations Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnam Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnamese Social Welfare Medal, Vietnamese Meritorious Unit Citation-Gallantry Cross, Vietnamese Unit Citation-Civil Actions, and Republic of Vietnamese Campaign Medal.
Commander Paschall was preceded in death by his former wives, Sue Ellen Benton and Carolyn Marcia Kester.
Commander Paschall is survived by wife Joyce Paschall, daughters Cynthia and husband Brad Carl, daughter Teresa and husband Tim Bartlow, daughter Kathy and husband Jack Hudson, stepchildren Victoria McFadyen, Samual Joshua McFayden, Sandra Gail McFayden, grandchildren Gabriel and wife Aurelie Morales, Jared Morales, Megan and husband Rob Vail, Caitlin Sue Welter, Hannah Hudson, and Abby Lee Hudson, step grandchildren Jason Bailey, Danny Williams, Sarah Williams, and Alex and Drew Moore, great grandkids Jade Galiena and Milan Francisco William Morales and Maddie and Knox Vail.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 27, 2021 at 1:00 pm in the Chapel of Coble Funeral and Cremation Service at Greenlawn Memorial Park. The burial of cremains will immediately follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
