May Leitch Sawyer

May as she was known was born on November 30, 1936 in Wilmington, NC, daughter of the late William Norwood Leitch and Viola Johnson Leitch and twin sister to Fay Leitch Gay.

She was preceded in death by her husband William Thomas Sawyer, grandson Jared Sawyer, and her parents William and Viola Leitch.

May loved square dancing, cross stitching, arts & crafts, and shopping with her granddaughter Caroline. Most of all, she loved her family. She met the love of her life, Tom. They were married in 1954 and spent 67 years together until Tom’s death last year. They raised their family and enjoyed their life together in Wilmington.

May is survived by her three children: Michael Sawyer of Wilmington, Wendell Sawyer (Sherry) of New Hampshire, and W. Randolph Sawyer (Becky) of Wilmington; three granddaughters: Jessica Sawyer of Wilmington, Caroline Sawyer of Wilmington, and Elisabeth Sawyer of Wilmington; step-grandson Christopher; four great-grandchildren; brother Robert Leitch; sisters: Fay (Leon) Gay, Jane (Costas) Tchouros, Katherine Brinson, Barbara Ann Brock; and many nieces, nephews, close relatives, and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30am on Monday, April 25, 2022 at Harbor United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers a donation to Caroline and Elisabeth Sawyer would be greatly appreciated.
