Nancy (née Roseman) Levi, age 89 of Chicago, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2024. Nancy was preceded in death by her beloved husband Richard Levi; parents Irving and Helen Roseman; sister Lynn (née Roseman) Owen. She is survived by her children Linda (Jim) Schoelkopf and David (Laurie) Levi; grandchildren Rachel (Chris Martin) and Ryan (Fares Akremi) Levi; Heath and Jeff (Kim) Schoelkopf; great-grandchildren Ashli, Austin (Olivia Rodreiguez), Tori (Colton Corlett), Ethan (Lexi) and Earon Schoelkopf; and five great-great grandchildren.
Nancy was born on October 24, 1934 on the North Side of Chicago. She was a lifelong Chicagoan and die-hard Cubs fan — going to Ladies’ Day games with her aunts and mother, sitting in box seats with her grandfather, and watching the Cubs win the World Series in 2016 with her kids and grandchildren. She met the love of her life, Richard, at Drake University, and they started a life together in Chicago where she got her education degree at Northwestern. The two married in 1955 and had two beloved children, Linda and David.
Nancy taught public school for more than 40 years — and continued correcting the grammar of everyone around her for much longer. She traveled the world, and loved crossword puzzles, word games and reading. Combining her love of books and her love of telling people what to do, Nancy served in various positions of leadership, including Book Sale Chair, for the Brandeis Book Sale at Old Orchard in Skokie for 20 years.
But her greatest love was people. She had a large and devoted group of friends to the end: the Original Bridge Group; the “Original MahJong game” who played together at least once a week for almost 70 years; and the “Walker Ladies” who met every Sunday for decades to walk, breakfast, and gossip.
Nancy came from a close-knit family and prioritized bringing them together throughout her life. She was never happier than seated around a circular table at a restaurant with several generations of family telling stories and sharing love. She gave love freely and warmly, always telling her loved ones that the most important thing was that they were happy. She made us all so happy.
The family would like to thank the incredible caregivers at HomeHelpers Home Care and the team at Suncrest Hospice. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to WFMT (wfmt.com) or Greater Chicago Food Depository (chicagosfoodbank.org).
