James H. DeVries was surrounded by his loved ones when he passed away on November 30th in Winnetka, IL at the age of 87. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor N. DeVries and his sister, Barbara Muth. He is survived by his five children Sara (George) Walker, James N. (Ann) DeVries, Peter DeVries, Adam (Ruth) DeVries, Mary (Michael) Caffrey, his 10 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and his wife, Margaret Barrett.
Jim was born in Chicago, IL in 1932 and graduated from the University of Colorado in 1954 and the University of Michigan Law school in 1961. He served as a Naval Aviator in the U.S. Navy from 1954-1958. Jim was a Partner at the McBride Baker law firm of Chicago from 1963 until 1982. Some of his clients included Morton Salt and Quixote Corporation. He joined Quixote full-time in 1982 and served in many different roles including EVP, General Counsel and Board Member. Jim was also involved in many organizations throughout his life including the Library International Relations, the Chicago Commons and the International Trade Club. He enjoyed his career and living in Winnetka for over 44 years. Jim retired in 2009 to travel, fly planes and love his family. He touched many lives over his years will be greatly missed by his neighbors, friends and family.
A Memorial service will be held January 18th, 2020 at 1:30pm at the Winnetka Congregational Church 725 Pine St, Winnetka, IL 60093. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Winnetka Congregational Church.
