Ivan Berkovitz, 78, passed away on Friday, May 31 surrounded by loved ones. He was the devoted husband of Caroll Berkovitz, and loving father of Darlene Berkovitz and Alexander Berkovitz. He was a wonderful grandfather to his four grandchildren: Cione, Roman, Phoenix and Rylan. Despite the distance, Ivan was also a caring brother to Eva Urbanova, and uncle to Monika and Danica in Slovakia. He was also fiercely loyal to family and anyone he called friend.
Ivan was raised in Bratislava, Slovakia, where he met his future wife, Caroll. Together, they fled the Soviet invasion and made their way to Chicago, IL with the help of HIAS. They married in 1969 and raised 2 children. Ivan was a mechanical engineer and even after retirement, maintained a love of numbers and problem-solving. He wanted always to be helpful, eager to lend a hand or ear to family and friends. Once the children were grown, Ivan and Caroll were able to pursue their love of travel, exploring many beautiful areas of the US and Europe.
A memorial service for Ivan will be held Friday, June 14, 2024, 11:00 AM at Weinstein & Piser Funeral Home, 111 Skokie Blvd, Wilmette, IL 60091 followed by a condolence luncheon from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Ivan’s memory to Chesed Chicago, chesedchicago.org.
