Robert was born on April 29, 1932, in Leroy Township, the son of James and Lillie (Smith) Wygant. He attended Williamston High School and was in the graduating class of 1952. Following high school, Robert proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. Robert was a Mason at Michigan State University and retired there in 1994 after 29 years of service. He was a life member of the VFW Post 6464.
Robert spent 43 years with his love and soulmate, Carol O'Kelly. They found true love and companionship within each other and never let go.
In his free time, Robert enjoyed fishing and hunting. He found peace in the outdoors. Robert loved taking the family and staying a weekend up at the cabin. He was a loving grandfather. His love and advice touched those all around him. He was an incredibly generous man.
A memorial service for Robert will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, September 22, 2023, at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, Williamston Chapel, 205 E. Middle St., Williamston, MI, with visitation at 10:00 A.M.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the Williamston Food Bank in Robert's memory.
Robert is survived by Carol L. O'Kelly; children, Margaret Ann Taylor, George Wygant, and Paul (Pamela) Wygant; nine grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and sister, Josephine Larson; Michelle Holliday; Carol’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents, James and Lillie Wygant; brother, Ronald Wygant; sister, Marilyn Ritchison; and son-in-law Gail Taylor.
