Clifford Rex Sloan

Clifford Rex Sloan, 86, passed away peacefully and surrounded by his family, on Sunday, May 5, 2019. Born November 26, 1932 in Walland, Tennessee, Rex moved to Michigan to begin working for A&P as a refrigeration operations engineer after serving his country in the United States Army. He settled first in Westland before moving his family to Webberville, where he and his wife Lennie raised their family and spent many happy years. Rex and Lennie spent the almost 63 years of their marriage supporting, encouraging, and loving one another dearly.

Rex had a wide variety of interests and hobbies: he was a rock hound, collecting and polishing stones for display. He was a masterful gardener, and a gifted woodworker. He was a talented painter who created beautiful landscapes using oil paints, and he enjoyed raising fish.

But above all, Rex loved children. A constant jokester, he connected with children on their level, firmly shaking their hands to play the “grab loose” game and giving each child a special nickname. He helped out with the children at church in a number of ways, and between AWANA, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, and summer camps, there are few children who didn’t know and love Rex.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Abslum and Mamie Alice (Ogle) Sloan, his daughter, Tina Sloan Rockwell, and his brother, James “Muncie” Sloan.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 62 years, Lennie Elizabeth (Powell) Sloan; his children, Clifford L. Sloan, Rachel (Mark) Carson, Pam Sloan, and Susan (Rob) Boshears; his grandchildren, Mark (Jessica) Carson Jr., Jami (Earl) Carson, Rev. Nicole Rockwell, Paige Boshears, and Samantha Boshears; his great-grandchildren, Mark Carson III, Riley, and Cecil Carson; and his siblings, Charles Houston “Turk” Sloan, John Eugene Sloan, William Elmer “Bill” Sloan, Lora Maxine Duncan, and Wilma Jo Wilson.

Memorial services will be held at Calvary Baptist Church, 500 N. Howard Street in Webberville, on Thursday, May 9, 2019 at 11:00am. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, and on Wednesday, May 8 from 5:30pm until 7:30pm at the church.

Memorial contributions in memory of Rex may be directed to the wishes of the family, care of Calvary Baptist Church in Webberville.
