Willie proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, earning several awards and medals, including the Bronze Star, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Occupation Medal, and Good Conduct Medals. He later worked and retired as an Oil Refinery Operator for Amoco.
Here in Williamsburg, Willie was heavily active with the community. He was a co-founding member of The Arc of Greater Williamsburg Chapter in the U.S., serving as an Arc Angel, volunteer, donor, and board member. Through The Arc, he volunteered and organized the Annual Christmas party, the William & Mary Arc Carnival, and the Annual Day at Busch Gardens, among other events.
Willie had been a member of the VFW – 8046 AUX since 1976. He was also a member of the American Legion and St. Olaf Catholic Church, where he was both one of the charter members and very active in the St. Olaf parish committee. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking.
He will be missed by his daughters, Suzanne Rinehart and Debra Stevenson (Ted Stevenson); grandchildren, Erin Duke, Amanda Duke, and Alex Duke; and great-grandchildren, Alex, Gabby, Waylon, Beau, Presley, Blake, and Carter.
Services will be held on Friday, May 24 at St. Olaf Catholic Church, 104 Norge Lane, with visitation at 12:00 PM and Mass beginning at 1:00 PM. Interment at Peninsula Memorial Park will follow at 3:00 PM.
