IN THE CARE OF
Nelsen Williamsburg
Thomas Walker Coyner, born September 9, 1963, went to be with his Savior on December 6, 2022, age 59, after a long illness. He was predeceased by his parents, Martin Boyd Coyner, Jr. and Betsie Gilmer Coyner and brother Martin Boyd Coyner III. He is survived by his sisters, Meredith (Andy) Klemm and Ruth (Lewis) Bell; as well as six nieces and nephews and 12 great-nieces and -nephews.
He was born in Hampden-Sydney, VA, the youngest of four children. Always a lover of animals, he had pets that ranged from earthworms to his beloved dog Topaz. His servant’s heart led him to work among the homeless for years and to do mission work in Romania and Brazil. Thomas also cared for his aging parents in their final years. He was gentle and peaceful and never sought conflict, and loved time with his 14 first cousins, reveling in family reunions. He studied at VCU and was a chef at a number of restaurants in Williamsburg and Richmond, including Le Yaca and Havana 59.
Thomas suffered for many years with a degenerative disease without complaint. Thomas had numerous interests, including woodworking and gardening, as well as a lifelong love for Jesus and Jerry Garcia.
“Lay down my dear brother
Lay down and take your rest.”
Visitation will be held at Nelsen Funeral Home at 12:00 on December 19, 2022 with the funeral service and burial to follow. Memorials may be made to the ASPCA.
