Sandra Downing Amory

Sandra Amory, 75, passed away suddenly on June 11, 2021, in Williamsburg VA. She was born to Dr. Benjamin Downing and Jacqueline Downing Casto and raised in Dunbar, West Virginia. She graduated from Greenbrier Women’s College in Lewisburg, West Virginia in 1965, before moving to Washington D.C. to work for Price Waterhouse and Hogan and Hartsen. It was here that she met Bob, her husband of 52 years. Sandy was outgoing and social. She made friends wherever she went and loved making connections with others. She always had a funny story to tell! She was an incredible organizer and frequently put together social events including parties and church events. Sandy also loved to buy and give gifts to her friends and family. She was constantly seeking the perfect item! She also applied her organizational and managerial skills to running the household and leading community groups. In addition to Dunbar and Washington, Sandy lived in Sleepy Hollow, NY; Cincinnati, OH; and Naples, FL before settling in Williamsburg. After Bob retired, they bought an RV and spent many happy years traveling 49 states, visiting national parks and other sites on their wish list. She is survived by her husband, Robert Amory; her daughter, Melissa Amory; her brothers, Ben Henry Downing and Jeff Downing; her sister, Jacqueline Kim Downing; as well as a nephew, nieces and a host of friends. Her service will be held on Friday, June 18 starting with a visitation at 12:30-1:30pm followed by a funeral service at 1:30pm at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd.; Williamsburg, VA 23188.
