IN THE CARE OF

Nelsen Williamsburg

Mike Northrop, a long time Williamsburg, VA resident, passed away peacefully on December 6th, 2023. He was born in Washington, DC in 1940. While on a first date at a high school dance, Mike met the love of his life, Susie, when he was just 16 years old. They have been inseparable ever since and happily married for 60 years. After receiving a master's degree from the University of Michigan School of Business Administration, Mike began a successful career as a businessman and entrepreneur. He and Susie raised their family in the western suburbs of Chicago. Following his time in the private sector, Mike devoted his time, energy and heart to many nonprofit organizations. While living in Minneapolis, Mike helped fundraise for Youth Forum, which provided youth ministry support services to more than 100 independent Christian churches. In Williamsburg, Mike served as an elder for six years at the Williamsburg Community Chapel where he also started the Stephen Ministries program, which provides care to people in the congregation and the community experiencing life difficulties. Mike also volunteered at Williamsburg Faith in Action, which provides support services for seniors, and The Lackey Clinic, a faith-based, nonprofit clinic providing free healthcare to uninsured Virginia residents. He was devoted to Susie and to spending time with his children and to being a loving Papa to his six granddaughters. He loved sunsets, the ocean, shelling, his small group bible studies, playing poker with his family, traveling across the country and abroad, family reunions in the Outer Banks, enjoying the beauty of nature, and serving as a mentor to so many. Mike is survived by his wife, Susie; his three children, Kimberly Northrop Airhart (Court), Michael Starr Northrop, Jr. (Kristine), and David Bradshaw Northrop (Rachel); his six granddaughters, Mackenzie, Kate, Libby, Abby, Lily and Riley; and his siblings Robert Northrop (Betsy), Carl Northrop (Michaelanne) and Sandy Northrop. A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Williamsburg Community Chapel on April 19, 2024 at 2pm. Memorial gifts can be made to the Lackey Clinic, 1620 Old Williamsburg Rd, Yorktown, VA 23690.lackeyclinic.org/giving.
