IN THE CARE OF
Nelsen Williamsburg
Flora Bolling Adams, 99, died peacefully at home on May 18, 2021 after a good long life.
She was born the ninth of eleven children to Robert Henderson Bolling and Laura Boggs Bolling in Flat Gap, Virginia on February 26, 1922. She received a two-year teaching degree from Radford State Teachers’ College (now Radford University), and later earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Maryland University. Flora married Kelsey Adams in 1945. They moved to the Washington D.C. area around 1950, and raised their four children in the Maryland suburbs. After retirement, they relocated to Williamsburg, Va.
She taught school for forty-two years, the last few as a teachers’ specialist where she got to share her considerable experience with others. During her life, among many things, she was an active member of the Christian Science Church, charter member of Alpha Delta Kappa (an honorary teachers’ sorority), president of the Williamsburg Poetry Guild, and member of Williamsburg Republican Women where she offered the opening prayer at meetings.
Flora had a passion for writing, both poetry and prose. She wrote and published three books for children, one play, and a book of her own poetry. She also contributed poems to other collections.
She is preceded in death by Kelsey, her husband of sixty-one years, who died in 2006. Flora is survived by her children, Karen Day, Kirk Adams, Rebecca Green and Mark Adams (Hope); 7 grandchildren, Jennifer, Jonathan, Mollie, Kelsey, Jeffrey, Jacob, and Hayden; 4 great grandchildren, True, Ruby, Eliana and Paisley; and her sister, Glady Alcarese.
A memorial service will be held at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, Virginia on Sunday, May 23rd at 2PM. The reception will follow immediately afterwards. Online condolences for the family may be shared at www.nelsenwilliamsburg.com.
