After graduation from high school he served in the Army during WWII from 1943 to 1946. He was assigned to an anti-aircraft artillery battalion and spent a year in the South Pacific.
Following his discharge he obtained a B.S. degree in psychology from The College of William and Mary. He then graduated from Richmond Professional Institute (Virginia Commonwealth University) with a master’s degree in psychiatric social work.
He was employed by the Virginia Department of Mental Health and worked at Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg from 1951 to 1984. At the time of his retirement he was the Director of the Social Service Department.
After his retirement he enjoyed a number of hobbies including photography, stamp collecting, bird watching, reading, and studying the history of Yorktown. He authored a book, Yorktown: Past and Present. Additionally, he had more than thirty articles published in various magazines and journals.
He also had a special interest in the natural history of the Bible and gave presentations to a number of garden clubs on birds, animals, plants, and flowers found in the Holy Land. He taught several adult night courses at William and Mary on this topic.
He was a long time member of Walnut Hills Baptist Church in Williamsburg, VA
He was devoted to his family and enjoyed documenting their lives and activities with hundreds of photographs.
Charles was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Tharon Nimmo. He is survived by his son, Charles R. (Chuck) Nimmo and his wife, Claudia; his granddaughters, Eliza Deneen and Rikki Dalton and her husband, Brent; and his great grandson, Aidan Deneen.
The family will receive friends on Friday, November 28 from 6 to 8 pm at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road, Williamsburg. Funeral services will be on Saturday, November 29 at 11 am at the funeral home, with interment to follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Williamsburg.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Walnut Hills Baptist Church, 1014 Jamestown Rd. Williamsburg, VA 23185.
