Alfred Bernard Jackson, Sr., 74, was born January 16, 1944 and passed away on July 29, 2018. He worked as a supervisor at Anheuser-Busch Brewery, Williamsburg in the '70s and '80s. In subsequent years, he worked for Community Action Agency, and in later years was self-employed. He was a member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church. Mr. Jackson was preceded in death by his grandmother, Bessie Jackson; mother, Marion Hortense Handley; and his step-father, Frank Handley.
Mr. Jackson attended West Virginia State College. He enjoyed people watching and conversation from his porch, and supporting family and neighbors in athletics. He mentored and encouraged youth of all generations. He was viewed by many (including himself) as the "granddad" of the community. He always had a smile and encouraging words ready in good times, and in challenging ones.
He is survived by his former spouse and the mother of his children, Sheila Horne; his daughter, Kimberly R. Jackson Davidson; his son, Alfred Bernard Jackson Jr.; his grandchildren, Denzell, Rebecca, Alfred III, Sojourner, Jordan, Jaylen, Kierra, and Kya. Others who will miss him are his first cousins Tiny, Charles Jr., Wayne, and Ronald. Other surviving special family and friends include Nesha J., Nicole L., Harriet A., Butch M., Kathy M., Orlando M., Maggie C., Peggy C., Shawn C., Joyce W., Tammy M., Diane A., Denise T., Brittnae G., Frankie S., Donnie S., Greg H., and Don H. He will be remembered with warmth and fondness by those he has left behind.
Visitation for family and friends will be Saturday, August 4, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home and Crematory, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd., Williamsburg, VA 23188. The memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m. on the same day at the same location. The reception location will be provided at the memorial service. Plants and flowers should be delivered to the Nelsen Funeral Home. The family wishes to express its deep appreciation to all who are not mentioned who visited, called, and supported Mr. Jackson in the recent months.
