Michael “Mike” “Mick” A. St. Michel, 81, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, May 30, 2021 in Wichita, Kansas. He was born on March 26, 1940 in Grand Forks, ND, the son of David and Julett “Jay”(Sunsdahl) St. Michel.
Mike grew up in Red Lake Falls, MN, with his parents and 2 sisters Sally and Judy whom he loved dearly. He graduated from Lafayette High School in 1958. He played football, hockey and enjoyed hunting, archery and fishing. Though he moved to Wichita, he stayed in touch with his family, friends and alumni, and celebrated his 60th class reunion.
He served in the United States Army from 1962 to 1965, his last post being in Germany as an Air Traffic Controller. Mike returned home from the Army but not for long. In the winter of 1965 he and a friend decided to leave the cold winters. They stopped in Wichita and decided to stay.
Mike retired from Beech Aircraft in 2002 after 37 years of service. Mike and Phyllis were married April 24, 1971. They enjoyed traveling, spending time with family and friends, truly defining love and family. Mike was a fun loving guy. He never met a stranger and was quite the story teller. Mike enjoyed spending winters in Mesa, AZ with his sister Sally and brother-in-law Bill and all their friends from back north.
Mike is survived by their son, Steve (Kim) St.Michel, grandchildren: Chrissy (Jeremy) Vandiver of Lee’s Summit, MO, Tommy (Rachael) St. Michel of Wichita, KS.; great-grandaughters: Angelina & Jocilyn Vandiver, Lahna and Emma St. Michel; sister, Judy French of Sparks, NV, brother-in–law, Bill Herzog of Shakopee, MN, step sister-in-law, Marti Bichel of Wichita, KS, step-sisters, Deloris “Dee” Berkeile of Belleville, IL, Evelyn (Bill) Morton of Mukwanago, WI, step-brother, Jerome of Auburn, MI and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mike is preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis, his parents, Dave & Jay St. Michel, sister, Sally Herzog, brother-in-law, Peter French, step- mother, Bernice “Bichel” St. Michel, step- brother, Spencer Bichel, step brother-in-law, Skip Berkeile.
A Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held at 1pm, Saturday, June 19, 2021, at Resthaven Gardens of Memory in Wichita, KS, with Father Daniel Duling Officiating. The family invites you to join them to honor a life well lived.
