Cardenas, Michael, age 87, was born and raised in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, and died Friday, June 19, 2015 in Wichita, Kansas. Michael immigrated to the United States in 1951, becoming an American citizen in 1967. This tall, dignified, dark haired, intellectual man went on to do many remarkable things in his life. After earning a degree in Mathematics Education from Emporia State University, he went on to teach at Jardine Jr. High School, South High School, and Wichita State University. Michael gave lectures, wrote articles for professional journals, eventually writing a book of family history. He was also active in professional organizations. A highlight of Michael’s career was speaking in Washington, DC on the topic, “Numbers, from Infinitesimals to Transfinite – Extremely Useful and Highly Abstruse”. Michael was a strong supporter of the Wichita Symphony, Wichita Art Museum, theatre and lecture programs. His personal library held more than 5000 books. Michael was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers in Mexico. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Jeanne; several nieces and nephews in Mexico; and many nieces and nephews in the United States. A Rosary will be held Thursday, June 25, 2015 at 10 a.m., followed by a Memorial Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 2007 N. Arkansas, Wichita.
