Joseph Callahan

He attended grade school in Brooklyn, NY at Our Lady of Lords before moving to Larned, KS for high school. A couple years following school, Joseph enlisted in The United States Navy. He joined as a Seaman Apprentice and was stationed on The USS Shangri La at Mayport, FL. While on The USS Shangri La, they traveled to different ports and he would take photographs of the Navy jets leaving and landing on the ship. During his time with The Navy he was decorated with 1st Award Good Conduct Medal.

February 26, 1970, Joseph Callahan married Jane Lohnes and was married for 20 years. He was a devout Catholic who attended Holy Cross Catholic Church in Hutchinson, KS for 10 years. Shortly after his sons graduated high school he moved to Florida to work for a trucking company. It was there in Winter Haven, FL where Joseph met Joyce and they later got married in 2001. After retirement in 2017, Joseph moved back to Kansas to be closer to his sons and they got to enjoy his company for the last 7 years.

He enjoyed photography, movies, dining out, coaching his sons' grade school soccer teams and watching football and baseball. He was always willing to spend time with his sons by playing football, baseball, golf, and attending sporting events. He was a very kind man who was always giving his full attention to his sons. He consistently worked hard to make sure they had what they needed as children.

He is survived by his sister, Helen Walker of Larned, KS; sons: Chris Callahan of Newton, KS and Jason Callahan of Wichita, KS; step-children: Barry Knight and Kelly Garcia of Hutchinson, KS; 8 nieces and 6 nephews.

A visitation for Joseph will be held Friday, October 4, 2024 at 10:00 AM at Resthaven Mortuary, 11800 West Highway 54, Wichita, KS 67209 with a funeral service to immediately follow the visitation at 11:00 AM. A graveside service will occur Friday, October 4, 2024 following the funeral service.
