From humble beginnings as a child growing up during the Great Depression on Maple Avenue in west Wichita, Don was drawn to artistic endeavors. He graduated from Wichita East in 1948 and attended Wichita University where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. It was there in 1952 where he designed the first WUShock decal, Don’s version being the happy, peaceful Shocker. Don was always known as a friendly, hard working and charismatic man, who celebrated successes of others. This was true for him in business as well, where his creativity and vision for advertising design would serve as inspiration for hundreds of clients in the future at his companies: Art For Living, Brinton Advertising and others.
His long list of clients is a veritable “Who’s Who“ of Wichita locally grown and now global companies. Serving aviation and other Wichita industries from the 1950’s until his retirement in the 2000’s, Don celebrated his clients’ successes and truly loved his work. Many clients turned into lifelong friends and will always remember his signature business style - greeting all with a smile, a handshake, and a classic story to entertain. Don was incredibly proud of his military service. He joined the Air Force in 1952, and served as first lieutenant tribunal solicitor during the Korean War.
He will lovingly be remembered by his four children from a union with Carol J (Hill) Craney, deceased: Mark and Carol Brinton of Willcox, AZ; Bambi Brinton Hanson of Wichita, KS; Mike Brinton of Fountain Hills, AZ; and Todd Brinton and Scott DeVecht of Rancho Mirage, CA; and his stepchildren from a union with Nancy (Johnston) Brinton: Kimberly Barker of Colorado Springs, CO; and Kennan Cole; as well as his 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren and 3 more on the way.
Don was predeceased by his parents, Lawrence Nathan Brinton and Hazel Viola (Edwards) Brinton and stepson Kennan Cole. Don passed away on March 14, 2022 at Oxford Assisted Living, where he had been at home for several years, inducted there as “CEO of Awesome”. Services will be held at 10:00 am on March 26, 2022 at Lakeview Funeral Home and Cemetery in Wichita, Kansas.
