Couchman, Alice Marie, died on May 21, 2011 in Harry Hynes care at St. Francis Hospital. She had just turned 95 on May 8. Alice Marie was a life-long resident of Wichita. She grew up in a neighborhood on Green not far from East High School as one of two daughters of Ervie and Grace Chamberlin. One of her neighbors, Charles Couchman, became her childhood sweetheart and then her husband of 58 years. They loved to play tennis together at the East High tennis courts on summer evenings before walking to Cero’s for caramel nut Sundays. Alice Marie was a gentle, unassuming, caring person who achieved her happiness through her family, friends and simple pleasures. She loved birds and flowers, reading, attending the symphony, a glass of wine and a cup of coffee. Under the right circumstances, she was known to thoroughly enjoy a margarita – even in her 90s!
Alice Marie’s greatest delights were her family, including her daughter, Suzie; her son-in-law, Larry; her granddaughters, Amy and Alison; and her son, Bob, all of whom were with her as she neared death. One of her greatest joys was meeting her great-grandson, Jonathan, who just turned two on May 6 and missed sharing her birthday by a couple of days. Alice Marie was the last of her generation in her family and she will be dearly missed by her family (including her niece and two nephews who live in Wichita), her friends and the many acquaintances she met in her long and fulfilling life. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 S. Market, Wichita, KS 67202 or Wichita Botanical Gardens, 701 N. Amidon, Wichita, KS 67203. Arrangements with Resthaven Mortuary.
