Susan Cox Wainscott, died August 1, 2016 in her home. A memorial Service will be held at 1:30pm on Thursday, August 4, 2016 at Hampton Vaughan Funeral Home. A private family interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5:30pm to 7:00pm, Wednesday, at Hampton Vaughan.
Mrs. Wainscott was born October 27, 1943 in Palo Alto, California. She and her family moved back to Wichita Falls in 1947 and she graduated from Wichita Falls Senior High in 1961. Susan and close friend Patricia Albert were recruited by the airline industry their sophomore years at Southern Methodist University and excitedly entered the world of aviation as Flight Attendants. Susan excelled at “coffee, tea or me” and these attributes would guide her throughout her life. While an attendant with Trans World Airways, she married Robert Larry in 1964, relocated to Reston, VA and was soon parents of two sons; Herb and Rob.
Susan returned to Wichita Falls in 1972 and introduced the city and local businesses to the employment term “temporary hires” with the establishment of Manpower Temporary Services. On September 26, 1979, she married Tom Wainscott, and continued the employment business into the early 1980’s. Looking to fill her spare time, Susan began volunteer work. Her initial effort was devoted to the Bethania Hospital. Here, her areas of interest were coordinating the scheduling of volunteers for the Information Desk and Surgery Waiting Room. She was also heavily involved in developing “continuity books” for major areas within the volunteer program. With the merger of the two hospitals, Susan headed in another direction and at her departure was recognized by the Bethania Volunteer Group for over 2500 hours of volunteer service.
Beginning in the early 90’s, Susan, with the guidance of her friend and mentor, Mrs. DeeAnn Bertram, began learning the art of embroidery. She was a member of the American Needlepoint Guild and Embroiderers Guild of America and continued honing her skills until eyes and fingers could no longer handle this delicate work. Her big event of this period was in 2013 with the showing of her and DeeAnn’s art at the Kemp Center. This showing of almost 200 pieces of their art culminated this period of her life. Her final volunteer efforts were devoted to the Arts Council of Wichita Falls where she was a volunteer over 8 years and served on the Board of Directors for 6 years. Her most favorite areas of interest were the “Mystery Arts” fundraiser for the Kemp Center and “Cowboy True” fundraiser for the Kemp at the Forum. She also assisted with the “Home and Garden” Shows and administrative functions at the Kemp Center.
Mrs. Wainscott was preceded in death by her father Jack Louis and mother Betty (Castle) Cox, and brother Jack L. Cox. In addition to Tom, survivors include sons; Herb Fletcher of Olney, Rob Fletcher and wife Beth, and sister Carolyn Neises of Wichita Falls, and brother Jim Cox of San Diego, California, and 9 grandchildren.
Susan’s greatest loves were for family, friends, and cool convertibles. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. The family would like to thank the WFSH Class of 61, Reunion Committees and the “Lunch Bunch” for their thoughts and prayers communicated through the class website. Also many thanks to the staff of the Kemp Center and Forum and all the volunteers for the many hours they assisted Susan with Mystery Arts and Cowboy True. Above all, thank you to classmates Brenda Boyd Blair and Karen Huper Anderson. Without their encouragement and love, Susan could not have endured the last two years.
