Joan Long, known to all who loved her as Honey, left this life Tuesday morning, May 16, 2017 after a brief illness. Joan was born March 17, 1933 in Kaufman County to James Monroe and Guada Chandler Lightfoot. She graduated from Kaufman High School in 1951 and on April 11, 1953, she married the love of her life, Charley Ray Long in Texarkana, Arkansas. They were blessed with four children, Jan, Rae, Deb and Michael as they traveled for twenty years as an Air Force family. She was the perfect wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and mother-in-law, setting the pattern and leaving a legacy of the epitome of a Christian woman. She was a faithful member of the Faith Village Church of Christ.
After she raised her children, she worked as the attendance clerk at Hirschi High School for 15 years, retiring in 1995. She thoroughly enjoyed her time there and loved all of the students. She was greeted with hugs from former students for years after she retired.
Hers and Charley’s life was about family, ALWAYS! She enjoyed all sports, loved to fish and was an avid card player; always the scorekeeper. She was the BEST COOK EVER!!!
Left to cherish her memories are her loving husband of 64 years, Charley, daughters, Jan Crowley and husband Mike, Rae Gillen and husband Keith, Debbie Owen and husband David and one son, Michael and wife Suzanne. She had 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by their first grandson, Kevin Michael Crowley and their great grandson, Ellis Tate Owen.
Visitation for Joan will be at Hampton Vaughan Funeral Home, Thursday from 6-8 pm. A graveside service will be held Friday at Crestview Memorial Park at 3pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name can be made to Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance at 533 W. Uwchlan Avenue, Downingtown, PA 19335.
The family would like to thank the entire staff of Hospice of Wichita Falls for their compassionate care shown to our beloved Honey.
