

Thomas S. Starynchak was born in Detroit to Michael and Mary (Gavulic) Starynchak at Harper Hospital on the morning of May 9, 1950. He passed away at the age of 74 on the morning of April 27, 2025. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Brenda Starynchak, as well as his niece and grandnephew, Cassandra Diaz and Nikolaus Marshall.
Tom grew up on the east side of Detroit near the city airport, where he attended St. Cyril and Methodius Slovak Catholic Church and School. He graduated from Osborn High School in Detroit. He continued his education at Macomb Community College, studying business administration, and then pursued a career as a sales representative across various industries, including wine, hydraulic fittings, and all types of insurance.
Tom was a devout Catholic who was deeply involved in his church, his Slovak heritage, the Knights of Columbus, and the Players Club in Detroit. He joined the Knights of Columbus in 1980, achieved his 4th degree status, and honorably served as the Grand Knight of the St. Nicholas Council for several years. He also continued to serve on the board. At St. Cyril and Methodius, Tom enjoyed supporting the annual Slovak Festival and participating in the men’s club, where he was recognized for his enthusiasm for his Slovak cultural heritage.
Tom had a passion for acting and directing plays and skits at the Players Club, a prestigious performing venue in Detroit. He performed in numerous productions and gained recognition for his one-man shows. For many years, he was an active member, often assisting others with costumes, set design, construction, painting, and stage management. He cherished his work and valued the friendships he formed at the Players.
A funeral Mass in his honor will be held at St. Cyril and Methodius Slovak Catholic Church in Sterling Heights, located at 18 Mile and Ryan, on April 9, 2025, at noon. Visitation will take place from 11:00 a.m. until noon. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the church.
