On Saturday, March 8, Spartan Nation lost its biggest fan. Richard Schaufelberger, father, grandfather, widower and 1959 graduate of Michigan State University died peacefully in his sleep at the age of 78.
A former Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne, Richard spent his career as an accountant at Shell Oil and then General Motors, from which he retired in the mid 90’s. Richard was a proud father, grandfather, musician, devoted Lutheran, supporter of the Republican Party and a man who was rarely seen without wearing his beloved green and white.
He is survived by his children, Kim Richelle (Richard) Beattie, Diane Marie (John) LaForge, and four grandchildren; Aleka Marie (Bradley) Baker, Emily Kristine Beattie, William Ross Beattie and Jan Andreas Kruszewski. He was also excited about the news of his first great grand child that is expected in October. The family thanks Seasons Hospice Foundation for their loving care and encourages friends, former colleagues and Spartans everywhere to donate to this kind and caring organization at www.seasons.org.
In addition, the family recognizes the staff at Independence Village of White Lake, in particular Donna and Nathan for their loving support, plus Mary and Angie who comforted Richard during his final moments.
Richard’s life will be celebrated by his family during a private service, where he will be remembered for his sharp wit, detailed story telling, love for God, family and country and, of course, his passion for MSU… Go Green, forever!
Military Service with Honors will be held Saturday, May 24, 2014 at 11:00 am at Great Lakes National Cemetery: Located at 4200 Belford Road, Holly, Michigan, 48442
