Robert Day Munger

Robert (Bob) Day Munger was born on November 19, 1929 and passed away quietly in his sleep on September 22, 2022 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. As a teenager he attended Shattuck Military Academy and after graduation attended Columbia University, Nebraska University and the University of Colorado in Boulder. Robert joined the Navy where he trained as a pilot during the Korean War.

Robert’s career included work as a petroleum geologist followed by a decades long career teaching Earth Science at Broomfield Middle School. His career choices mirrored his love for the outdoors and the environment. Whether he was sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm with his middle school students or with family and friends on the side of a mountain, his passion for the world around us was clear to all who had the privilege of knowing him. As a skilled outdoorsman, Robert participated in activities that included high adventure mountaineering, river running, hiking and rock collecting. He climbed nearly half of Colorado’s 14ers and always brought back at least one rock. He hiked down and up the Grand Canyon three times and rafted the Colorado River. In his later years, Robert developed a keen interest in genealogy.

Robert was an active leader and advisor for young people. He was a dedicated Boy Scout leader throughout his adult life, in particular with Troop 78 in Boulder. He organized and led many trips throughout Colorado and Utah for The American Youth Hostel organization. Over the years, Robert influenced many young lives through sharing his love of the outdoors.

While attending the University of Colorado, Robert met his future wife, Aliene Munger. They were together for 69 years and had five children, twelve grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. He had a strong love for his family and his language of love was expressed through spending quality time with them, most often in outdoor settings.

Surviving Robert is his wife, Aliene, his sons, R. Michael Munger, (Lynn Carlson), Jeffery B. Munger, (Nancy Munger), William T. Munger, (Denise Munger), his daughter Susan P. Cohen, (Bob Cohen) and his brother Jim Munger (Liz Moriarty). Robert was preceded in death by his son, Robert Day Munger, Jr. (Bill McDonough).

Robert lived with Parkinson’s disease for over sixteen years prior to his death from complications caused by the disease. Please make donations in Robert’s memory to further Parkinson’s Disease research.
