Mark was proceeded in death by his father Warren, whose dying wish was for Mark to care for his mother in his absence. As a testament to his loyalty and dependability, Mark graciously and humbly honored his dad’s wishes by insuring she continued to live a fulfilling and independent life until his last breath.
Mark is survived by his mother Katherine; his brother Daniel; his four children Brandon, Sierra, Morgan, and Alexis; and his niece and nephew Bryan, and Sheindel.
Mark was born on June 25,1961 to Katherine and Warren Smith in Lakewood, Colorado. After he graduated from Lakewood High School in 1980, he began his career at Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad until his retirement in 2018.
In his free time, Mark found joy in the things that got his adrenaline pumping: skydiving, scuba instructing, rock climbing, drag racing, snowboarding, hiking, mountain biking, and taking his kids to haunted houses, action movies, and amusement parks. These activities kept Mark young into his 60s. Mark’s love of the Rocky Mountains, outer space, the island of Kauai, his dogs, aliens, and all things nature were imbued into his children's identities and will be the driving force that keeps his spirit alive.
Mark’s final resting place will be in the Rocky Mountains with his father, and on the island he called home, Kauai. May we remember him through his adventurous spirit and his ability to fight for what brought him joy. Even when his body was taken over by cancer, Mark showed his strength through being present for his children and making it a priority to create as many new memories as possible. In his final year of life, he was able to enjoy several movie premiers with Brandon, share his passion for skydiving with Sierra, experience zip-lining for the first time with Alexis, and check off a bucket list item of getting his first tattoo with Morgan. In the words of Mark, “Don’t procrastinate and look for me in the dragonflies.”
In lieu of a memorial service, Mark’s family would like people to donate to the Denver Dumb Friends League or other local animal shelter.
