Chata passed away in her home in Denver, Colorado surrounded by family and friends. We were immensely blessed to have one last dance with Chata as she cut up, joked, wore her “Juicy” couture pants and danced with loved ones, one last time. As her time dwindled down in those final hours, her family was able to pray over Chata and let her know that we loved her very much and will always carry her in our hearts.
It was easy to be Chata’s friend. She always had a wise crack joke or something funny to say. She welcomed you into her home and her restaurant with open arms. Her Love, that was larger than a mountain, fit inside that pint size heart of hers.
Chata was the life of the party and loved to dance – if you hung out with her, she would not let you sit down. She kept you moving and shaking to the next best hit that was about to blare through the speakers. Chata enjoyed getting down to all kinds of music – popular juke box favorites from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s; line dancing to Country, Mexican dancing to Tejano, Norteño and Ranchera, and she could shake a leg to some old school Hip Hop. She was the best dancer at St. Bernadette’s, like Cha Cha DiGregorio, in the movie Grease.
She wore her hair in a bullet proof red bouffant armored in Aqua Net. She often enlisted the help of one of her grandchildren to pick the holes out of the back of her hair, with a pick comb. She dressed marvelously – rhinestones, glittery stars, high heels, bling-bling jewelry, and red lipstick– she demanded to be seen!
Chata was one in a million. Swearing like a sailor was one identifiable way of her making sure you were part of the group; it was a term of endearment. When she loved you, she loved you for all of your genuine uniqueness. And if she didn’t love you, she’d bare knuckle box you. Just ask her daughter Christina. Chata welcomed all to her heart, and to her family.
We will miss you Chata, we know you’re dancing in heaven with your daughters, Gloria and Janice.
