Duane was born December 12, 1925 in Kearney, Nebraska. After graduating from Ft. Lupton High School in Colorado in 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was a member of the 68th Signal Battalion, U.S. Army Signal Corps, serving during World War II in New Guinea, Leyte and Luzon, participating in the liberation of the Philippine Islands. Following his Army discharge in 1946, Duane graduated from Colorado State University with a B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering. He retired in 1988 from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation after forty-two years of service.
In 1950, Duane married LaVera Johnson and they celebrated sixty-two years of marriage. Their daughter Sherrie was born in 1957 and their son Gary was born in 1962.
Duane was preceded in death by his wife LaVera (2013), his son Gary (1994), his father William C. Carlson (1983), his mother Gevalene O. Martin (1990) and his sister Elaine Bertholf (2006). Duane is survived by his daughter Sherrie and her husband Kirk Czirr, grandson Kyle Czirr and his wife Lauren and grandson Erik Czirr.
He loved spending time with his family and enjoyed bowling, camping, fishing, hunting and traveling. He could repair almost anything around the house or car. Duane was a gentleman and chose to always be happy and optimistic.
Duane leaves us with great memories and has given us the gift of timeless moments that we will hold in our hearts forever.
Memorial service and burial will be at Olinger Crown Hill Cemetery located at 7777 W. 29th Avenue, Wheatridge, Colorado 80033 on Monday December 12, 2022 at 10 A.M. Donations may be made in Duane’s memory to Citizens for Animal Protection (17555 Katy Freeway Houston, Texas 77094).
