Sonny was born in Yarmouth on June 24, 1943 to Melbourne and Kathleen (Ford) Barr. He grew up in Weaver Settlement, attending a one room school in Ohio and graduating from Weymouth High School. After graduation he attended Modern Business College in Saint John.
He was a member of the Weymouth Church of Christ where he served in many capacities over the years – deacon, elder, Sunday School teacher and superintendent, secretary of Church Board, chairman of cemetery committee. He cared deeply for his church family.
Sonny was a business entrepreneur from an early age – picking blueberries for 5 cents a quart; mowing lawns; raising chickens and selling eggs. He started working at Lewis Lumber Company as a teenager and after Business College was secretary and then president for over 20 years. He later was superintendent for Department of Transportation in both Digby and Annapolis.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, many different sports, flying his own plane and especially golfing. He and Gloria travelled to many places and spent nearly 20 winters in Dade City, Florida where they made many friends.
Sonny was a dedicated family man who loved spending time with his children, grand children and great grand children. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Gloria (Lewis); children – Steven (Tracey); Pam (Timmy) Sullivan; Laurel (Ted) Wagner; Greg(Amy); 10 grandchildren – Jeff (Kyle); Dominic (Katelyn); Val (Phil); Gabbie (Bhavi); Caitlin (Jody); Brandon (Abbey); Nick (Kayla); Kiersten (Mitchell), Eric and Jack; 2 great grand children – Barret and Noah and a third on the way; brother Raymond; sisters Arla (Gary) Marshall and Heather Barr.
Visitation will be held on Monday, February 5th from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm with funeral service on Tuesday, February 6th at 1:00 pm all from Weymouth Church of Christ. Reception to follow.
