Minnie Johnson

Minnie passed away peacefully at her home in Ogema on Friday December 27, 2019 at the age of 94 years.

She was predeceased by her loving husband Alton Johnson; parents Martin and Betty Olson; brothers August Olson and Albin (Tilly) Olson; sisters Anna (Chester) Grainger, Jenny Olson, Bertha (Bob) Booth.

She is survived by her son Perry (Pat) Johnson; daughter Candice (Brian) Schwindt; 5 grandchildren; Craig Johnson, Wayne (Christy) Johnson, Carri (Cory) Henheffer, Shawn (Stacy) Schwindt, Tanya (Trevor) Johnson. Great grandchildren Carlie, Conor, Cadie Henheffer, Dalton Johnson, Riley(Sasha)Schwindt, Gavin Schwindt .She also leaves her furry friend, Sadie, who was constantly at her side.

Minnie was born on April 3, 1925 at the family farm SE of Ogema. She took her schooling at Lyons school about one mile SE of the farm. She worked as a domestic for several people including her future mother in law Albertina Johnson; she also worked at the hatchery in Weyburn candling eggs. She had a lifetime connection to all animals, especially dogs and cats. Her most enjoyable job was cutting hair; she did it for over 40 years. We’re sure she was one of the only barbers that fed you coffee and lunch after; she definitely wasn’t in it for the money but for the visit and companionship she received. Minnie married Alton on October 15, 1947 and so began her life as a housewife, mother, and hired hand. She worked beside her husband outdoors with the seeding and harvest of crops, haying, milking cows, feeding pigs and chickens and everything else he needed help with. When she was finished helping him, she had her garden and housework to do. She definitely didn’t shy away from hard work. In the spring Alton would hire young boys from town to pick rock. Minnie would pick them up after school or on weekends and they would pick rock by hand. She would feed them at the end of the day and those growing boys sure could eat. Some of the boys became like family and felt like this was their second home. Many of them still dropped in to visit her whenever they were in the area.

Her grandchildren and then her great grandchildren were the light of her life, and she always kept up to date on everything they were doing. Her grandkids spent a lot of time at her house along with their many friends; they all called her “Grandma J” and they all have many stories to tell about their experiences while at Grandma’s house.

Everyone that knew Minnie knows the coffee pot was always on and great food to go along with it. She wouldn’t let anyone leave without a full belly. She liked to call herself the “apple pie and cinnamon roll lady” and she made both exceptionally well.

She was a terrific lady and will be missed terribly by all her family and friends. She was kind hearted and had a smile that would light up any room.

At the request of Minnie a Private Family Graveside Service & Interment took place at Amulet Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Craig Johnson, Cory Henheffer, Shawn Schwindt, Trevor Johnson, Wayne Johnson, Riley Schwindt, Conor Henheffer and Gavin Schwindt.

A Celebration of Minnie's Life was held on Saturday, January 4, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at the Deep South Pioneer Museum, Ogema, Saskatchewan.
