Sammy Anest, 97, soulmate and loving husband of Albertine (Desrocher) Anest, passed away peacefully at home with his wife and daughters on Tuesday, July 9, 2024. Born Sava George Anastasakis on February 14, 1927 to George Sava (Anastasakis) and Angeline (Mascolo) Anest. Sammy graduated from Hartford Public High School in 1945 and went on to a successful career in property management, including G. Fox & Co., Hartford National Bank, Gampel Realty, and retired as a Vice President from Society for Savings. Sammy was a musician and played the bass/bass guitar in several bands, including his own Society Sounds that played weddings and events throughout the Hartford area and was a regular feature at the Blue Danube. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Parish in Newington for over 70 years.
He loved gardening, cooking, fishing, woodworking, and was an avid NY Giants fan and looked forward to his football discussions with his grandson. He was Mr. Fix-it and he could repair or build anything you wanted, and he had every gadget that you would ever need. Above all, Sammy loved spending time with his family, who meant the world to him.
Besides his wife of 75 ½ years, he will be forever missed by his daughter, Kathryn Carle, and his daughter and son-in-law, Carol Anest and Chief (Ret’d) John Klett, all of Newington. He will be remembered for his unconditional love and unwavering support and pride for his grandson, Dr. Nicholas Sava Grondin of Brandon, Florida and granddaughter, Emily Elizabeth Carle of Newington. Papou will forever be by their side. In addition, he leaves two step-granddaughters, Dr. Samantha Klett of Columbus, Georgia and Rebecca Klett of Pahoa, Hawaii. Sammy’s loss is felt deeply by his sister, Marye Cerra of Wethersfield. He also leaves his cousin, Joseph Mascolo of West Hartford and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife’s brothers and sister, Ernest Desrocher, Raymond Desrocher, and Florence Grondin.
The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to Sammy’s aides, Regina, Rolaine, and Francine and to the Compassus Health Care family, especially nurses Amy, Joyce, Kelsie, and Jennifer for their compassion, support and love during this time. Sammy was a man of integrity, hard work, and compassion, and his kindness, generosity, and legacy will live in the hearts of all that knew him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 26, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Church of Annunciation Parish, 626 Willard Avenue, Newington. Everyone is asked to please go directly to the church. Burial will follow in West Meadow Cemetery, Newington. There are no calling hours.
