Nancy DiMauro Mazzarella, 97, of Redington Shores, FL, formerly of Hartford, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2022. She was born on October 21, 1924, in Hartford, where she resided for most of her life. She was the devoted wife of Joseph Mazzarella who predeceased her on January 5, 2007. Her oldest son, Salvatore Joseph Mazzarella, predeceased her on November 7, 2020. Nancy was the daughter of the late Paul DiMauro and Mary Migliore. Her three brothers, Tom, John, and Paul, predeceased her. Her brother Salvatore DiMauro lives in Glastonbury.
Nancy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by three daughters and one son; Josephine Schessauer of Switzerland and husband Hans-Peter; Dora Rafala of St. Petersburg, FL, and husband Michael, and Michelle, Kevin and wife Jennifer, Steven and his wife Shayla from OR, and Mary Porter of Uncasville, and husband Christian and grandchildren Tiffany and Christian Jr.; Paul Mazzarella of Norwich, and wife Beth and granddaughters, Rachael and husband Tom Knauer from PA, Rebecca and husband Kyle Gless, from Waterford, and Stephanie; a daughter-in-law, Dawn Mazzarella, wife of the late Salvatore Joseph Mazzarella, and their two children, Joseph Mazzarella of Milford, and his wife Ashley; Deborah Perez of Newport, RI, and her husband Michael. Nancy was a great-grandmother with four great-grandsons and three great-granddaughters.
Nancy parents were Mary Migliore and Paul DiMauro, who immigrated to the U.S. from Floridia, Siracusa, Sicilia, Italy. Nancy and her siblings were born in America. When Nancy was 12 years old, the family returned to Floridia, Italy. At the age of 18, Nancy informed her parents that she was leaving Italy and going back to America to live for good. Nancy and her brother John DiMauro got on a ship and sailed for 10 days, arriving at the port of New York, U.S.A. They rented an apartment, found employment and began a new life in America with abundant educational and professional opportunities available.
Nancy married the love of her life, Joseph Mazzarella, on September 24, 1949, in Hartford and they were married for 58 blessed years. Together, Joe and Nancy founded Mazzarella Masonry Construction Company in Hartford, where she diligently managed the office and bookkeeping with her husband for over 30 years. Nancy also found time to work in the school cafeteria and often spoke of how much she enjoyed her cashier duties and getting to know and care about the students throughout the years.
Nancy will best be remembered as a very intelligent, caring and generous person who was hardworking, determined and resourceful. She loved her family and created many happy memories of family togetherness, especially at holidays and summers at the family beach cottage in Old Lyme.
